Ait Benhadou
Set on a step hillside, the fortified village of Ait Benhadou will be familiar to many people who have never set foot in Morocco, for it has been used as a film location over many years, beginning with Robert Aldrich’s 1963 film Sodom and Gomorrah, starring Stewart Granger, and more recently featuring as the provincial town in the film Gladiator.
Aït Benhaddou is a historic ighrem or ksar (fortified village) along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. It is considered a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The ksar with its mighty rammed earth houses and proud kasbahs served as a backdrop for numerous films, like Lawrence of Arabia, Sodom and Gomorrah, Gladiator.
The highest village terrace offers a magnificent view over Ait Ben Haddou, the valley of the Oued el Maleh and the High Atlas Mountains.
